How did the city of Philadelphia get its name?
Philadelphia is one of the oldest cities in the United States, founded by William Penn in 1681. The name "Philadelphia" is Greek in origin, combing the words "philos" which means loving and "adelphos" which means brother. The Philly is known as the 'City of Brotherly Love', reflecting its founder's vision of a place where people of different backgrounds and beliefs could live together in harmony. Various names or nicknames for the city are The Quaker City, The Birthplace of America and The Cradle of Liberty, all highlighting different aspects of the city's history and culture.
