Ticker Symbol Naming

Don't forget how you look on the stock exchange

Naming public companies requires a thoughtfully conceived ticker symbol — it’s an opportunity to reflect your brand name or even add another layer of depth to your story. A ticker symbol, or stock symbol, is used in the stock market to uniquely identify a specific publicly traded company.

The typical format of a ticker symbol is an abbreviation, consisting of letters between the length of one to five characters. Depending on the stock exchange platform, there are particular guidelines for the format of the ticker symbol. For example, on the Nasdaq symbols usually consist of four to five letters, while on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) ticker symbols generally consist of three letters or fewer.

An important step in developing a ticker symbol is to understand the meaning, if any, particular letters carry on the specific stock market your company will be on. For example, the letter “Q” as the last character of the stock symbol indicates the company has declared bankruptcy. Being aware of the meaning of certain letters in regards to ticker symbols and stock markets can help indicate the correct company history and current status to those investing.

PS212 Naming & Branding has developed both company and corresponding ticker symbol names. A few names on the Nasdaq that we have helped with include TGNA (Tenga), OUTR (Outerwall), and ROCK (Gibraltar).
