How did the city of New York get its name?
New York City is one of the most iconic cities in the world. In 1664, the English captured the city from the Dutch, who had named it New Amsterdam. After the English took control, they renamed it New York in recognition of James Stuart's title as Duke of York. NYC is known as the 'The Five Boroughs', referring to the city’s five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Various names or nicknames for the city are The Big Apple, The Empire City, The Capital of the World, Gotham, The Concrete Jungle, and famously The City That Never Sleeps, all highlighting different aspects of the city's history and culture.
